Keep your hat on: G-B police hands out free helmets

GILGIT: As part of a campaign to raise awareness about traffic laws and road safety, Gilgit-Baltistan police gave motorcyclists free helmets at an inauguration ceremony attended by Chief Minister Hafeezur Rahman on Tuesday.
More than 400 helmets will eventually be distributed across the region as part of the campaign. The drive was inaugurated at the central police office. IGP Zafar Iqbal Awan was also present on the occasion.
After the event Rahman told journalists, “We all appreciate this step.” He added, “It will help control road accidents which claim lives.”
The CM said his government was planning to raise a special traffic police force in G-B. “The force will consist of 200 personnel; we will need the help of the federal government.”
He pointed out traffic problems were also exacerbated by parking issues. According to Rahman, in future the construction of markets would be linked to the provision of space for parking.
Awan shared the drive was assisted by Khunjerab Villagers Organization, based in Gojal, as well as other entities.
“The sole purpose of this initiative is to raise awareness among bike riders to use helmets while on the road.” The IGP added more than 400 helmets would be distributed across G-B during the awareness drive.
Superintendent police Tahira Yasu, who is in charge of traffic police and was present at Tuesday’s event, said the use of helmets would be made mandatory for bike riders. She added action would be taken against those who violate this rule.
